Efflorescence typically appears as white powdery or solid crystalline salts, but it can also manifest in shades of brown or green. It directly impacts the appearance of buildings, is prone to spreading, and is challenging to eradicate. If left untreated for an extended period, severe efflorescence can gradually damage paint surfaces, subsequently affecting the structural integrity of walls, hence the term "wall cancer." In reinforced concrete structures, it may even lead to corrosion of the reinforcement bars, and paint delamination, impacting the health and longevity of the building.

Efflorescence (wall cancer) is caused by minor water seepage and occurs in materials like concrete, bricks, etc. The formation process is as follows:
The surface dampness of efflorescence can promote mold growth. (Note: Using fungicides to treat efflorescence is a misconception. As long as there is no water seepage, mold cannot survive = dies) Additionally, it can indirectly affect the respiratory system of individuals, leading to respiratory diseases such as asthma or allergic rhinitis.

- Common on walls painted with cement, moisture seeps from the outside inwards without distinct leakage points or watermarks.
- Appearance of powdery or filamentous white mold
- This leads to unsightly wall appearances and peeling of cement paint. Despite scraping and repainting, it continues to regrow, forming the common efflorescence
- It flows out through wall cracks or tile gaps with noticeable water droplets, white watermarks, or thick calcium carbonate, also known as "efflorescence."
- Mainly composed of soluble salts such as sulfates or chlorides
- These substances do not originate from the concrete itself; they may come from contaminated water or mixing materials during the mixing process or infiltrate the structure
- Concrete strength decreases, leading to crumbling
- If sulfates are present, they may cause sulfate attack on the concrete; chloride salts can corrode the steel reinforcement, both of which can reduce the lifespan of the building
